What is hospice care?
Hospice care is for people with a serious illness who choose comfort instead of treatment aimed at a cure. The hospice team cares for your loved one and supports the whole family.
The basics of hospice care
- What it means
- Nurse visits, symptom relief, medications and medical equipment, plus support for the family.
- What it doesn’t mean
- That care stops. Medical care continues, and the team visits according to the care plan.
- Where care happens
- At home, in nursing homes and in assisted living facilities. Our team comes to your loved one wherever they live.
- Who decides
- The patient or their representative, with the family and doctor. The patient can change their decision at any time.
How hospice care works
Asking about hospice doesn’t commit you to anything. A doctor confirms whether hospice care fits, and the patient decides whether to choose it.
Hospice care focuses on comfort
The aim is to help your loved one feel as well as possible and spend their time on what matters to them. Hospice care includes:
- Relief from pain, shortness of breath and other symptoms
- Care that follows your loved one’s own wishes and goals
- Emotional, social and spiritual support, if they want it
- Guidance and support for family caregivers
Care comes to where your loved one lives
We provide hospice care at home, in nursing homes and in assisted living facilities. Our team visits your loved one and the family where they live. Ask us whether we can come to your loved one’s address.
A team shares the care
A hospice team usually includes a hospice physician, nurses, hospice aides, a social worker and counselors who offer spiritual and grief support. Not everyone comes to every visit. The care plan sets who visits and when.
Hospice care doesn’t mean giving up
Hospice care changes the goal of care, not the attention your loved one gets. Treatment aimed at curing the main illness stops. Care for comfort and support for the family continue.
Choosing hospice isn’t a final decision. The patient can stop hospice care at any time and go back to treatment for their illness.
Medicare covers hospice care for eligible patients
Medicare Part A includes a hospice benefit for people who qualify and choose hospice care. New Era Hospice is Medicare-certified and accepts Medi-Cal.
